Any Recent Britain Invaded Stories?
|
| |
At one time there used to be a thriving sub-genre of near-future stories of Britain being invaded. Over the years the identity of the invaders has changed in-line with the geo-politics of the era, from French to German to Soviet to accomodate the then-current bogeyman. But have there been any such novels since the turn of the century? I'm... more »

LOTR science fictionalised

Lots of people have done the search and replace thing to turn Star Wars into fantasy. I think I'll do it to turn Lord of the Rings into science fiction. Halflings: A human offshoot subspecies engineered to be terraformers. They can endure very marginal conditions but will eventually turn the world into a very Earthlike one.... more »

Planetary romance reading list

Some friends of mine will soon be writing a pulp solar-system based sci-fi RPG. Their current product, _Hollow Earth Expedition_ is a WWII-era Burroughsesque lost world setting, with forays into straight- up pulp adventure (exilegames.com if you're interested). But for this one, think canals on a dying Mars, jungles on Venus, that sort of... more »

Garrett PI / TunFaire
|
| |
I've been a fan of the Glen Cook series of books about the fantasy world featuring the investigator Garrett. It's an homage to the Nero Wolfe books, if Nero were a massive dead alien critter. Anyway, in the Wikipedia article, it says that Garrett's home city is based on St. Louis. Cook is a long-time resident of the city (he... more »

RASFW dreamin'

My dreaming included a sentient ("sapient") parrot named Mike Schilling. It seems people with woowoo powers can boost the IQ of certain pets, causing them to develop human-level intelligence. The guy with the parrot (who wasn't me-he had a name but I don't recall it) had a woowoo power for finding... more »

SF humour, in its many varieties
|
| |
I've been doing some fairly intense work at my 9-5 recently, and have taken - as ever - to relaxing with a good book. I seem to be working my way through humourous and light works (though not necessarily both funny *and* light), and would welcome some recommendations from the crowd since I'm running out of funnies.... more »

Help w/ Star Wars books requested
|
| |
I bought volumes 1 & 2 of the "Dark Nest" trilogy by Troy Denning. I began reading "The Joiner King" & saw numerous references to prior events concerning the "Yuuzhan Vong", totally new to me. So what should I read to get up to speed on this/them?? Any advice will be appreciated.

Of Elder Gods and happy endings
|
| |
Recently, I had a dream. And when I woke up, I was bothered by it. Shortly described (it was a rather minimalist dream anyway) Cthulhu & Co had appeared to take charge - in a rather civilized way - and I was all "I, for one... etc, show me the way to the press conference". Since somehow, I was convinced that if I only asked a few well-put questions,... more »

12: With a Little Help from My Friends
|
| |
We're getting a lot of off-topic material lately. Anyone up for a round of "inundating rasfw with new on-topic threads?" As seed-fodder, I will be using the titles from Joe Cocker's The Best of Joe (Yes, I did manage to go almost 50 years without knowingly hearing him sing. It happens).
