Everything that you've described so far sounds like confusion about
Classic vs Layouts templates. If the blog uses Classic templates, you
can't use Layouts, and vice versa. You can't fit a square peg into a
round hole.

Many third party templates are for Classic blogs, because Classic
blogs have been around longer, and because with Classic templates you
have to do more work to add accessories. Both factors made the market
for Classic templates larger.

Layouts templates are easier to customise without editing the template
HTML, so the third party services haven't developed as many
templates. So if your blog uses Layouts, you need to check the cute
layouts and make sure that they are written for Layouts, before trying
to jam one onto your blog.
